Components of the Academic Skills Provision Toolkit

This toolkit was developed as part of the Academic Skills Development Project.

It aims to support you in mapping, reviewing and enhancing your college-based academic skills provision, defined as provision that extends beyond the tutorial system and subject tutor support in college. College-based provision is further complemented by departmental and university-provided academic skills resources and support.

Academic skills include traditional study skills such as academic reading, writing and referencing and more general skills that facilitate effective and successful academic study, for example critical thinking, time management and digital literacy.

You can view the toolkit components in the tiles below.

The components are interconnected and complementary, rather than sequential, allowing you to engage with whichever components best suit your requirements at any point in time.

You can also view our introduction to the toolkit and read below why academic skills provision matters.

We would like to hear from colleges who are looking to work through this toolkit. We can provide support with facilitating workshops and help colleagues identify next steps. Please get in touch with us at contact@ctl.ox.ac.uk.

Why does academic skills provision matter?

Academic skills include traditional study skills such as academic reading, writing and referencing and more general skills that facilitate effective and successful academic study, for example critical thinking, time management and digital literacy.

  • The research literature indicates that mastering academic skills is vital for student academic achievement, wellbeing and success in higher education
  • While research shows that academic skills development is generally most effective when embedded in subject teaching, additional provision can strengthen inclusiveness of skills development, especially for disadvantaged students and diverse student cohorts
  • Purposeful academic skills provision facilitates and demonstrates engagement with ambitions articulated in the University’s Access and Participation Plan (APP).
