Centre for Teaching and Learning recognised in 2024 Vice-Chancellor’s Awards shortlist

We are very proud to have been recognised in the 2024 Vice Chancellor’s Awards shortlist.

This year, there were 250 award entries across the 11 categories, representing 1,500 individuals.

I am incredibly proud to have such amazing people in our team.

Professor Rhona Sharpe, Director, Centre for Teaching and Learning

Shortlisted submission: Digital Synergy: Unleashing Dynamic and Inclusive Anatomy Education

Colleagues from the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics and Digital Innovation in IT Services, together with Drs Xavier Laurent and Sandra Morales Rios from the Centre for Teaching and Learning’s digital education team, have been shortlisted in the Inclusive Teaching and Assessment category for their submission Digital Synergy: Unleashing Dynamic and Inclusive Anatomy Education. This category recognises groups of colleagues at Oxford who have adopted approaches that make teaching more inclusive for different groups of students.

The Digital Synergy project successfully implemented immersive technologies such as virtual reality and digital resources such as 3D software tools and H5P-based Canvas materials, to create a diverse range of teaching initiatives aimed to enhance students’ learning by reducing barriers that could hinder their engagement in anatomy learning.

Shortlisted submission: Tailored SpLD Support Pathway and Student Support Plans

The Centre’s Inclusive Education Officer, Vicky Drew, together with a team in Student Welfare and Support Services, has also been nominated in the Support for Students category for their submission Tailored SpLD Support Pathway and Student Support Plans. This awards category recognises groups of colleagues at the University who have supported students’ development.

Vicky and her colleagues worked together to streamline and speed up the provision of Student Support Plans (SSPs) that detail the range of adjustments recommended to support disabled students at Oxford, freeing up advisors to focus on meeting with students with more complex and substantial requirements.

The early and immediate improvements yielded by this project (eg speedier provision of SSPs) are already clear and give confidence that further improvements can be made for other disabilities, strengthening the inclusivity of the teaching and learning environment for students.

The Vice-Chancellor’s Awards are a University-wide celebration of our outstanding people. They celebrate excellence, dedication, courage, ambition and inspirational contributions to Oxford’s mission.

Following the announcement Professor Rhona Sharpe, Director of the Centre for Teaching and Learning, said ‘It is wonderful to be acknowledged in this way. One of the goals of the Centre is to partner with divisions and other professional services to help create an environment at Oxford where each of our students can achieve their academic potential and being shortlisted in these categories recognises this work in practice. I am incredibly proud to have such amazing people in our team.’

What was previously five separate groups of awards has become a University-wide celebration this year for staff across Oxford.

The winners and highly commended nominees will be announced at a ceremony at the Sheldonian Theatre in May, and a showcase will also take place in the Weston Library. Find out more on the awards webpage.
